Whyborders matter — and a borderless world is a fantasy by VictorDavis Hansonhttp://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-hanson-borders-20160731-snap-story.html
Thepopulist push back against unchecked immigration from Mexico,
Centraland South America gave rise to the presidential candidacy of
DonaldTrump—predicated on the candidate’s promise to build an
impenetrable border wall.
Thesolution to endless war, some argued, was to eliminate borders
infavor of transnational governance. H. G. Wells’ prewarscience-fiction
novel “The Shape of Things to Come” envisionedborders eventually
disappearing as transnational polymaths enforcedenlightened world
governance. Such fictions prompt fads in the realworld, though attempts
to render borders unimportant — as, inWells’ time, the League of Nations
sought to do — have alwaysfailed.
Undaunted, the Left continues to cherish the vision of a borderless world
asmorally superior, a triumph over artificially imposed difference.
Thosewho deride borders are unwilling to address why [people choose
tocross them], leaving their language fluency and native soil — atgreat
personal risk.
