This happened to me one time and it wasn't funny -

I was driving my VW Rabbit convertible from Nashville to Little Rock
and was following a car with a mattress strapped on top through
traffic in Memphis. Sure enough, it came loose and I ran over it, the
mattress getting stuck under the car.  After pulling off to side of
the road I realized the mattress was on fire (from the heat of the
catalytic converter).  I pulled forward and backed-up several times
before getting unhooked at just about the time I was about to flee and
fight on foot.  It's funny now but wasn't at the time.

It only took this guy 30 miles to figure out he had a problem and only
then when he ran out of gas.
